BUILDING 005 is a small hotel in the centre of El Cabanyal, in Valencia. In a neighbourhood defined by its fishermen’s houses, the new building respects the traditional building typology in its façade, reproducing identity-bearing ornamental motifs from the neighbourhood that, far from being mere decoration, contribute to preserving and recognising its memory.

Despite the complex geometry of the plot, the traditional building typology of the neighbourhood is also studied in order to design interior spaces that respond to the climatic conditions of the surroundings. The decision is made to create a large courtyard with vegetation at the rear, which acts as a bioclimatic resource and, at the same time, as the visual endpoint from every guest unit.
The system is resolved through wooden volumes that group together the hotel’s service spaces, giving the floor plan a clear order. This arrangement is conceived with the capacity for future transformation, allowing the building to adapt to other uses without altering its structure.

Inside, the neighbourhood’s constructive tradition and climatic logic are combined with contemporary design solutions. The wood of the service volumes converses with the current finishes, and the landscaped courtyard becomes the visual vanishing point of every room, extending natural light into the interior of the building.
